A note from Export Navigator:
Tuesday March 4th 2025 morning marks a sad historic day in Canadian – US trade relations. The following tariffs and counter tariffs will have officially commenced by the time you read these lines (all information provided is as of the moment of sending this email and is subject to change):
- USA levies a 25% tariff on Canadian made products
- For now deminimis shipments (valued under US$800) are still possible, subject to change once the US Customs Border Protection (CBP) agency will be caught up with a process robust enough to handle millions of shipments annually. At that time a formal entry will replace deminimis.
- Canada levies a 25% tariff on a first list of select US made products immediately and a second list to be announced after 21 days.
Please know that if you sell products made in China or Mexico to the US, those products will also be subject to tariffs entering into the US. The tariffs are as of present as follows:
- USA levies a 25% tariff on Made in Mexico products
- USA levies a 20% tariff on Made in China products
- For now deminimis shipments (valued under US$800) are still possible for both Made in Mexico and Made in China products (see above comment).
Besides the above listed actions, further tariffs have been announced for steel and aluminum products, possibly commencing March 12, 2025. Furthermore investigations are underway for copper, forestry products, energy and digital services.
